Suggest Remedy For Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: My 14yr old daughter had heavy bleeding during her menstrual cycles which is on a 15 day cycle. She has polycystic ovaries as revealed in the scan. Her blood PCV and Ferritin went very low due to bleeding . Her doctor prescribed femilon for 21 days for regularizing her period . Being a mother makes me overtly concerned about hormone pills at the age of 14 and I wonder if there is any other line of treatment (milder)????

Brief Answer:
Your doctor advice is right.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can realize your concern towards your daughter.

At the age of your daughter mostly menstrual cycles are anovulatory( means ovulation does not occur) so these prolonged anovulatory cycles sometimes make them prone to endometrial hyperplasia or cancer in future.( oral contraceptive helpful in these scenario, it will decreases the chances of it)

Your doctor gives the right treatment to her because in her case she is having PCOS and heavy menses both can be treated with the aid of oral contraceptive pills (like femilon as in her case).

You can give her primolut-N tablet twice a day for 21 days for 3 cycles to regulate her menses (after conferring with her treating physician).

She can take tranxemic acid 500 mg twice a day for 3 days.

Give her iron and calcium tablet.

Along with this, treatment you can conform to my advice for future-

-She should take low carbohydrate, high protein diet along with lots of veggies and fruits.
-Drink a lot of water and take less spicy and fried food.
-Get along some physical exercise to maintain her weight.
-Do some yoga and meditation to decrease her stress level.

Hope I have answered your query if you have further questions I will be happy to assist you.

Good luck.
Regards
Dr.Richa
