Posted on Thu, 7 May 2015
Question: in the month of february, i had my periods for the 2nd time in 15 days. I was scheduled to go on a long distance bike ride the next day and so I asked the gynaec to give me medicines to stop my period immediately. apart from the pills and injections, i was also prescribed progestron pills for 21 days, which I followed. I haven't had a regular period since then. I've done a pregnancy test and the result is negative. there are 2 questions I have
1. what can I do now to regulate my periods
2. does progestron aid pregnancy or does it prevent pregnancy ?

Brief Answer:
Blood pregnancy test. If negative take progesterone for withdrawal bleeding

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
I will answer your second question first. Progesterone taken in the secretory phase ( second half of period cycle) aids pregnancy. Taken for 21 days like this it prevents pregnancy.
Do you have regular cycles always? If you have had irregular cycles before, then this could be an expression of that.
Since it is already 16th April, I advise you to have a blood pregnancy test done (Blood pregnancy test is more reliable and sensitive than home pregnancy test). If it is negative I will suggest you to start progesterone 10mg (Provera or Primolut N) daily for 7 days under guidance of your local doctor. You will start your period within a week’s time.

I hope I have answered your concerns.

thank you doctor. I have had pcod for many years. however, my cycles have been regular for the last 5-6 years. it was only in feb when I had my period twice in 15 days.
I will consult my local doctor here and check for the 7 day progestron doze that you have suggested. however, I've consumed an I pill just last night. will it be okay to take progestron now?

Brief Answer:
If you have taken I pill I suggest that you wait for one week.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

The I pill itself can delay your period. If you have taken I pill I suggest that you wait for one week. I pill itself may start your period in a week's time.

Are you taking I pill quite frequently? This can cause temporary irregularity in periods. It would be better to take regular contraception like pills to avoid pregnancy. Pills are also helpful for your PCOD condition.

I hope this helps.
