Suggest Remedy For Lack Of Appetite And Energy After Upper Respiratory Infection
Question: I have had an upper respiratory infection for over 10 days. I have been taking Mucinex-D which is bringing up the phylem. I still feel lousy with no appetite and not much energy to do anything. Can I expect this to be gone soon. If it doesn't go away should I go back to the doctor?
Brief Answer:
Get Liver function test.
Detailed Answer:
lcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
Anorexia (reduced appetite), weakness are very common after viral infection.
But if your anorexia is severe , I would advise you to get Liver Function Test done to see for any Jaundice.
If the report comes out to be normal then I suggest to take Appetite stimulants like Syrup Activate , Stimulov. They are on the counter available medicines and don't require prescription.
If you have any further query please ask me.

This is an upper respiratory infection and has nothing to do with my liver. You didn't give me an answer as to what else I can do to get rid of this. I will regain my appetite once I feel better. I don't need appetite stimulants. Not a good review from me!!!
Brief Answer:
Liver Injury can occur following URTI.
Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) is a viral or bacterial infection. Since it persisted for long, it might have caused liver injury. There are many viral fevers, that present like URTI but also affect the liver. Reduced appetite can be the reason behind that.
As far as your query is concerned, your appetite would improve in a few days post URTI.
I have advised few appetite stimulants that we frequently prescribe to our patients post URTI induced Anorexia.
You can take them for a week and see your appetite will improve.
If you don't want any medicines for that then, you can start taking more if fruits and green leafy vegetables. Include soup in diet.
Nothing else is required.
Your appetite will otherwise also improve in a week or 10 days if your Infection was a simple URTI.
I hope this helps.
