Suggest Remedy For Lump In Chin And Mild Headache After An Accident

Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2016
Question: I fell and hit my chin pretty hard on a skate ramp. I have a small lump forming on my chin and a little soreness in my teeth. Nothing is chipped. I don't have and lumps anywhere else and just a slight headache. Will icing the chin be enough or should I get x rays to know if everything is fine?

Brief Answer:
If no other manifestations xray not necessary

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Some local swelling and pain is to be expected after such a hit so in themselves are not a cause for alarm in case you do not have other symptoms.

Manifestations to worry might be:
- difficulty in opening and closing your mouth (no pain or restriction - no damage to the joint),
- feeling that when you close your mouth your teeth your teeth are not well aligned (do not meet correctly),
- sensation of movement of some tooth,
- numbness or sensation loss which could indicate nerve compression due to some fractured fragment

If you do not have such manifestations I do not think xrays to be necessary, some ice initially might help in limiting the swelling.

I hope to have been of help.
