Suggest Remedy For Oil Burns On Face

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: HI,
Hot cooking (olive) oil splashed in my face and a small amount got in my eye. This happened about an hour ago. I have splotches of red on various spots on my face. I also have a patch in the corner of my right eye (near the tear duct). It is still stinging but is getting better. I'm trying to avoid a trip to the ER, but let me know your thoughts. No blistering yet. Thank you.
Area by the right eye is starting to blister...Is anyone there?!

Brief Answer:
If some got in your eye and you are having eye pain, go to ER.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I am sorry you got burned. Also that no one responded. I know that HCM advertises an immediate response but that doesn't always happen - is dependent on what types of doctors are actually online taking questions.

I know you are hoping to not have a trip to the ER, but in this case it is warranted. You may have a corneal burn or abrasion/ulceration and the only way to know is to look at the cornea with a slit lamp, which all ERs have. And if there is a burn, you may need a corticosteroid ophthalmic ointment to decrease the inflammatory response and possibly an ophthalmic antibiotic (but not necessarily the latter).

So please do go in and be seen.
