Suggest Remedy For Pain Around The Ribs And Back
Possible rib strain or lung problem
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us. I am sorry to hear about your problem. I am an orthopedic doctor and often see issues like this in my practice. I will try to address your problem to the best of my ability.
I have reviewed your profile and noted your previous treatments and medications.
There are a few possibilities for your symptoms. I presume you have no other symptoms like cough, shortness of breath or a fever.
Sometimes pain around the ribs on both sides can be referred pain from the spine. The nerves in the spine can become irritated and cause pain around the chest wall.
Muscle pulls and strains can also happen in the rib cage. These usually settle down with simple pain medications and and the application of heat. I have seen small fractures in ribs, called insufficiency fractures. These can occur with excessive coughing or a fall/injury.
It might be a good idea to have your doctor examine your lungs and maybe order a chest x ray.
At this stage you can try applying heat - this might work better than ice. I usually send my patients to a good physical therapist who can teach you some stretches and exercises you can do at home.
If the above approach is not helping then you should see your primary care doctor for a more extensive examination.
I hope this information is helpful. Please message me back if you have any further questions.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Adrian Rawlinson MD.
