Question: My 4.5yo fell at daycare yesterday and hit behind her right ear on the bone on table. It is swollen, red, and bruised. She is acting normal, however still complaining of it hurting. I looked in her ear and noticed a lot of thick white material as well as a small black dot on her drum. Should i be concerned or worried and bring her in to be further evaluated?

Brief Answer:
If the child is active and fine you need not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the query and understand your concerns. The ominous signs to look out for, are:
* Vomiting
* Loss of consciousness
* Convulsions
* Excessive pain (presence of some pain is acceptable)

Unless the above symptoms are present, you need not worry. If any of the symptoms develop, you would need to rush the child to the ER and get a CT scan done. Else, you can wait and observe. Meanwhile, you need to give her paracetamol/tylenol syrup to bring down the pain. It would be easier for me to comment on the local reaction if you could upload an image of the affected area using the facility on the upper right of this page.

I would await your response.

Brief Answer:
Checked the image. Does not seem worrisome to me.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

I have checked the attached image. I do not think that there is anything to worry about. What you see is the effect of local injury that will heal up in a week or so. In the meantime, give her paracetamol/tylenol if she has pain. Ice pack may be applied. Otherwise, nothing else needs to be done unless anything else goes wrong. So stay relaxed.

Hope that helps.
