Suggest Remedy For Persistent Cough In A Person With Asthma

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Dec 2015
Question: I caught a cold traveling in early October. I've had a course of antibiotics and two courses of steroids because I have asthma. It's now five weeks later and I still have the cough. It's not constant, but happens usually when I speak, and my voice is deeper. Should I be concerned/seen?

Brief Answer:
Better to have a follow up with your doctor again.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Severity of symptoms asthma can lasts longer in some attacks. It can be due to an external allergen you are exposing daily like dust or animal hair or pollen. So stay away from those irritating factors. Use proper mask in such situations. Avoid exposing to cold air also.

It is better to have a follow up consultation with your doctor as it is already 5 weeks. Blood routine should be done to rule out any signs of infection and high eosinophil count. Follow up x ray or spiromety can be done after physical examination if necessary.

Taking prophylactic antihistamine like levocetirizine and mast cell stabilizers like monteleukast will be helpful also. In case of internal offending factors like laryngo pharyngeal reflux present then proton pump inhibitors like rabeprazole should be added also.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
