Posted on Mon, 28 Dec 2015
Question: Having continuous hiccups from the last 24hrs or more. In between the hiccups stopped for few hours and again started.

Had a similar episode some 10 yrs back and the hiccups stooped after 4 days. Kindly advise.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to gastritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Continuous hiccups can be caused by gastritis, anxiety, liver pathology, irritation of diaphragm, full stomach, etc.
In case there are any such factors involved then try to remove the cause.
Drug treatment includes metoclopramide, baclofen or nifedipine. Your physician can choose the drug best for you if the symptoms are persistent.
For short term relief, you can suck on a lemon, have short frequent meals, hold your breath for a few seconds whenever hiccups start.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Hell Doctor,

Local physician prescribed Liofen 10 (Baclofen) . But, the hiccups do re-occur and not completely stopped. When hiccups re-occur, it stays for 5-6 hours. I plan to visit a specialist. Whom should I visit? should I visit an ENT?
