Question: Why would I have continued pain in the hepatic Flexure and recently had pains like a knife has been inserted when touched. I have complained to doctors but they say that nothing is there. Only happens when I have stomach problems. I think it is the hepatic Flexure it is just below the rib cage on the right hand side.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.

You have been complaining of pain in the right upper abdominal area that you call the hepatic flexure. This is the area where the ascending colon makes a turn and crosses the upper abdomen. You can experience pain in this area when there is spasms of the colon. If you have problems with constipation then you should also be taking a high fiber diet and using Metamucil or citracel to help with the constipation. I also recommend reducing caffeine and alcohol. The caffeine can cause sensitive smooth muscles in the colon and the spasms.

If you have not had a colonoscopy then I would also recommend one to rule out cancer though this is not a common symptom with colon cancer. I only recommend a colonoscopy as everyone should have one.

I hope this answers your question. Please contact HCM again with your health care concerns and questions or if you need additional information
