Posted on Tue, 12 May 2015
Question: I will like to know what is the reason for my eyes keep getting red, when im in my office, when i go to a supermarket, when im outdoor etc. I need advise as to how to help my condition i guess is because of my meds. Metropolol/HCTZ 50/25mg daily, I take benadryl 25 mg HS I can't sleep at night, and maybe the aspirin 325 mg daily ( being taking it since 2 months ago. Im tired of using eye drops. Last night i tried castor oil drops in my eyes, and baking soda cool compress. Today my eyes are worse. What can i do in the mean time im getting depressed with this condition because nothing seems to help. I have this condition now for maybe 3 years but i thing its getting worse. The only place i feel better is in my house otherwise everywhere get my eyes red. I mean in the winter or summer. I already went to maybe 3 or 4 different ofthalmologist nothing help. What do you think should i tell my doctor to change the metropolol maybe and stop taking benadryl and what will make my condition better.?

Brief Answer:
These symptoms can be because of dry eyes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr Dadapeer k an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.
I reviewed your history.
The symptoms you have mentioned most probably indicate dry eyes.

The medications you are using in the form of Metaprolol and Benadryl both are known to cause dry eyes as a side effect rarely.

Hence I would like to treat this condition by the use of Artificial tears eye drops like Refresh tears eye drops 3- 4 times a day.
If the symptoms decrease then no need to be worried.
If the symptoms does not decrease then you probably need to change Metoprolol.

Castor oil in pure form is used for symptomatic relief in dry eyes, but it is not very effective in treating dry eyes but it is known to prevent dry eyes. For treatment purpose it gives best results when used along with drugs like artificial tears eye drops. Similarly soda compress is used for treatment of blepharitis or inflammation of the eye lid margins which can be present in dry eyes.

Hence the two treatment options which you have used like castor oil or soda compress can be used along with medical treatment but alone they will not be very effective.

Hence I advice you to start using artificial tears eye drops like Refresh tears and wait for the response.

Please mention the name of the eye drops prescribed by your ophthalmologists so that I can get a fair idea regarding the treatments you have received and the probable diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you

Thanks for your response, in the past maybe like two years ago, They prescribed steroids dont remember the name, restasis (irritate my eyes) and maybe her and there artificial tears i think i already used refresh drops, Not sure if I used it before. I will talk to my PCP to see if possible to change the metropolol and then i might stop taking the benadryl at night and maybe try something else to sleep. Now im using thorughout the day eye allergy relief drops and blink tears (which help for a few hours)to keep my eyes clear and then I will apply again maybe after lunch I know i shouldn't use eye drops so often but it is embarrasing to have red eyes.

Brief Answer:
You need to change Metoprolol and Benadryl.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The history you have provided confirms the diagnosis of Dry eyes.

Since you have been using artificial tears eye drops and there is no relief, the better alternative is to avoid the drugs which will increase dryness of the eyes.
Hence I suggest you to consult your primary care physician to change the drugs, metoprolol and benadryl.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
