Question: Hi Doctor, My 40 year old son recently flew to Bali, Indonesia from LAX..a long, long flight. He went straight to the plane from skiing in Mamouth, CA. He arrived home in Bali, tired but well. Overnight, his wife reports he began to act irrationally, was clumsy as if drunk, instead of exhaustion became hyperactive, did not sleep for hours, even went to a golf course but he has no memory of any of it. Just before finally collapsing he lost balance, a fell repeatedly. We want him to head to Singapore for a med exam..but are worried he should not fly..possible DVT..can you advise? He reports that he did not drink alcohol on the plane. He thinks he took something to sleep at home, but has no memory..admits to dehydration. He has a history of regular alcohol use, daily. And self medicating with sleeping pill. Again, says he did not feel well on the plane and did not drink, alcohol.

Brief Answer:
I think we need to rule out electrolyte imbalance first

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

From the available description the possibility is DVT is much less than electrolyte imbalance which is more common for a person who just skied and travelled on a long flight with history of dehydration.

Chances of DVT for a healthy young men is very rare provided he is not suffering with some disorder related to hyper coagulation such as recent surgery, obesity, too tall or too small, family history of DVT, or due to some medication.

I request you to ask for electrolytes from nearby laboratory before making any conclusions. This is very simple test which can tell many things to us in this demanding time. Once we know the abnormality it can be treated there itself as Bali have adequate medical facilities.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.
