Dandruff is due to over-proliferation of a normally present micro-organism on our skins. When under control, it does not give rise to visible changes. However, when it overgrows and is associated with secretions and dead cells from the skin, it gives rise to typical symptoms of white flakes (dandruff) that are sometimes associated with hairfall and itching.

To control dandruff, one need use following measures:

1 Maintain good hygiene of scalp.

2 Using a Ketoconazole-ZPTO containing shampoo, twice a week or more often.
Every time it is used, it should be allowed to remain in contact with all hairs for 6-8 minutes to permit the medication to act for sufficient length of time.

3 Noskurf lotion for leave-it-overnight application once a week.

4 Antiallergics like LEVOCETIRIZINE 5 mg a day in case itching is significant and bothersome.

It takes some weeks for the results to show up.

For controlling hair fall, which I presume is diffuse all over the scalp, and the hairs are falling from the roots, needs to be tackled as follows:
(most of my patients are on this treatment with encouraging response)

1 Use a brush with wide spaces between the bristles, to minimize force on hairs

2 Brush only when hairs are dry

3 Light massage with avoidance of force

4 Biotin 10 mg a day

5 Folica solution, 15 drops twice a day for scalp use. Pl apply with polythene covered finger to avoid staining. Slight itching lasting less than five minutes after application is a desired response, though some individuals do not experience the same.

The treatment for dandruff and hair fall can be pursued simultaneously.
