Suggest Remedy For Stabbing Pain In The Arms

Posted on Wed, 29 Apr 2015
Question: I had intermittent mild stabbing pain in my left arm at the inside of my elbow during the night. This was accompanied by a bit of headache and a more than usual awareness of my heart beat. Should I see my GP or am I being a bit over anxious?
Sometimes at night or in the early morning I do get a hot flush, or over heated.

Brief Answer:
You should see your doctor to investigate the pain origin.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM! I understand your concern and would like to advice you to pay careful attention to you arm pain radiating to the left elbow. I recommend you to consult your GP to rule out first any episodes of myocardial ischemia (as ischemic heart problems sometimes are reflected with left arm pain). A careful physical examination coupled with a resting ECG and some blood tests (including cardiac enzymes) are helpful for this purpose. Eventual cardiac ultrasound and an exercise stress test may be necessary (if any suspicions is raised a cardiologist visit would be advisable). Once cardiac implications are excluded, then a further differential diagnosis may clarify the pain origin.
Remember that pain during the night is hardly of a functional origin (that is anxiety), so you need to talk to your doctor.
If you have further questions, do not hesitate to ask!

Hope to have been helpful. Greetings! Dr. Iliri

Hi Dr Lliri,

Thank you for your comprehensive answer.

Forgot to say that I had a quantity of black chocolate before sleeping last night coupled with other chocolate during the day! Did 2 hill walks, one on Sunday and one on Monday and was fine afterwards. Not sure now if I need to go to the doctor urgently anyway.

Brief Answer:
A medical check up is advisable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again dear XXXX! I don't believe chocolates may have influenced on your symptoms and prior physical exertion is not a reliable indicator to judge your actual complains. I don't see an urgent situation to face with, probably nothing to do with you heart. But we need to be sure. A medical check up is necessary, nothing to be neglected. This is my medical opinion.
My Best Regards!
