Question: I have been on Bactrim for one week. Last night I experienced severe swelling on one side of my tongue. Could this be a reaction to Bactrim. I took an antihistermine and swelling has subsided

Hello,

bactrim may cause allergic reactions. Parts of the mouth may swell when an allergic reaction occurs. The improvement achieved by the antihistamine is an indirect way to confirm the allergic nature of this symptom. You should talk with your doctor for alternative treatment. If you were taking it for a urinary tract infection then you can take a cephalosporin, amoxicillin with clavulanate or a quinolone. Your doctor is the best person to offer relevant options.
