Suggest Remedy For Swelling On The Lower Abdomen

Posted on Fri, 23 Jan 2015
Question: Hi Doctor:

I have been having intermittent swelling to my right lower abdomen below to the right of my belly button which at times swells to the size of an orange and feels hard. I press on it and it flattens, I pass an awful lot of gas and hear lots of rumbling in the abdomen. When I pass the gas it goes down then evenually goes away completely and abdomen is flat again. Its only to the one side and not the other side. I did have an abdominal US about 8 months ago of abdomen and pelvis which revealed fibroids only, everything else fine. I feel no pain when that happens just pass so much gas. Is gas getting trapped on on that side? I do drink a cup of prune juice daily. Thanking you for your help.

Brief Answer:
It could be Hernia.

Hi
As per the description, it looks like hernia.
It occurs due to weakness of abdominal muscles. The bowel comes through a defect and and seen under the skin.
It is best diagnosed clinically by a General surgeon.
The Swelling will appear after coughing ,disappear
by pressure and lying down.It is best diagnosed clinically.
Please consult your General surgeon and proceed.

Hi Doctor:

I had gone to an MD who ordered an abdominal ultrasound that showed only fibroids and no hernia. This apparently happens when there is a lot of gas after the gas disappears it no longer swells? This is why I am so confused. I do move my bowels. I do drink prune juice daily. Had a colonoscopy a few months ago which showed a benign polyp which was removed. Does a colonoscopy and abdomnal ultrasound how small intestine as well. This has apparently happened maybe 2-3 times this whole year. Anything I can do to help it? There wouldn't be a tumor?

Brief Answer:
It is not a tumour.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Colonoscopy can see only Large intestine.
Ultrasound abdomen can see the small intestine. But,the hernia is due to defect in abdominal musculature Which is not clearly seen in Ultrasound.
CT Scan abdomen will give more information.
Sometimes, small bowel will become distended and seen as protrusion in a thin abdominal wall, even without hernia.
Please consult your Surgeon or Surgical gastroenterologist and ask for CT Scan abdomen.
Hope I answered your query.

Hi Doctor: One more small question. What can cause small bowel to become distended and seen as protusion. You have been very helpful in answering my questions. Its just so tough to get an appointment with a specialist without waiting several months these days. I do a lot of lifting on my job. I guess I need to be more careful in lifting.
