Question: I have not been sleeping for three day. ambien was only 5mg. Xanax works better for me.

Ambien dose can be increased up to 10 mg. Ask your doctor for the same.

If ambien 10 mg is not helpful, other alternative medicines should be used.

Xanax is very potent sedative drug. It will be useful for sure. But do not combine it with ambien.
Xanax may cause tolerance after 3-4 weeks of use. It means you need to take more dose. Gradually it can cause dependence and you can not stop it.So better to take it always as per doctor's prescription and guidance.

If I were your treating doctor, I would like to use clonazepam(klonopin).It is causing the least or no tolerance and very much less dependence.It is also long acting than xanax.
