Suggest Remedy For Vaginal Swelling After Using Clindamycin

default
Posted on Sat, 1 Aug 2015
Question: A few weeks ago I had an abnormal pap smear and the Dr said just mild inflammation and they would prescribe a 7 day dose of clindamycin. Since I didn't have any symptoms i forgot about it and I delayed getting the cream until this week when I thought I might have a yeast infection. I got the cream and diflucan prescription. Since I was off work for 2 days I thought I may as well do the cream twice a day and shorten the 7 day time period. I used the vaginal cream twice Wed and twice Thur and by yesterday Friday inside my vagina was so swollen I can barely get the applicator in. So obviously I got too much clindamycin in me so now what do I do? How do I make the swelling go away?

Brief Answer:
sitz baths, anti histamines, anti inflammatory meds

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

As you mentioned, the reaction is likely due to using the clindamycin twice daily.

The swelling is an inflammatory reaction so using anti inflammatory agents would help.

This would include: (1) antihistamines to treat any allergic aspect to the swelling,

(2)anti inflammatory pain killers, even if there is no pain.

The anti inflammatory ability of these medications would help to reduce the swelling.
This includes meds such as ibuprofen, naproxen, cataflam. One of these would help and they are over the counter

(3)sitz bath- this means sitting for 10 to 20 minutes in warm water
There are special containers some persons use but you can use your bath tub.

Water should be warm, not hot and salt or epsom salt added. Can also add baking soda if you wish

It may take 24 to 48 hours for improvement to start to occur.

After the swelling has resolved then you may want to resume treatment for the yeast infection.
It would be important to use the meds as suggested to avoid any other reactions.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Well, today is Monday and over the weekend, Fri-Sun, I did the following:
Took ibuprofen, 1 Epsom salt bath, Benadryl 4 times

And today there's no change. I called my OBGYN Dr. and she's off. The nurse practitioner said to use Desitin and a cool not cold pack as a compress. I kept telling her it's not external swelling. But that's all she could tell me to do.

Should I take a cold bath? Is there anything else I can do? The nurse obviously didn't seem as concerned about it as I am.

Brief Answer:
may need to monitor

Detailed Answer:
HI

I am sorry that it there is minimal improvement and that the nurse did not realize how much it is bothering you

Besides, the cold bath, since you have been consistently using medication, there may not be anything else you can do but monitor and wait for it to resolve.

It will improve, will not stay as is, but may take a little longer, it is understandable that it would be very disturbing

Please feel free to ask any other questions

Thank you for your help. I met with the nurse today and they said everything looks fine. They said I'm probably irritating the area by doing so much to it. I'm not sure that I buy that, but I'll give it time and see what happens. I'm supposed to stop everything for a week and go back to the Dr. and get checked out.

So now it's a waiting game. Word to the wise and anyone reading this - FOLLOW THE DOSAGE INSTRUCTIONS!

It's possible that I could've still had the reaction to the clindamycin but probably not as severe as it was with two days of double dose.
