Suggest Solid Food Diet For A 6 Month Old Baby
Question: My daughter has completed 5 months and 6 days. She is still taking only mothers milk. We want to introduce other foods to her. What are the foods that can be given.
Brief Answer:
Introduce semi solids from 6 months of age
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Mother's milk is the best possible feed for a baby upto 6 months of age. It is good to hear that she has been exclusively breast fed. Please continue that upto 6 months of age before introducing semisolids. Thereafter you can start with thick liquids like fruit juice or porridge. Soon you can mash up ripe bananas and give her. Mashed boiled potatoes can also be given. You can boil rice and pulses together along with vegetables and give it in mashed form. Gradually shift to all sorts of adult food low on spices, but in mashed form.
Hope that would help.
Let me know if I could be of further assistance.
Regards

Thx doctor. What kinds of fruit juices & porridges can be given after 6 month completion. Can specific details be given
Brief Answer:
You may give all sorts of fruits that you can give in mashed or juiced form
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. There is no restriction on the type of fruits that can be given. You will have to mash or juice them. Applesauce may be given.
Porridge may be made from suji or dal. Biscuits may be dipped in milk and given.
Think of it as the child is gradually reaching the adult form, at least in terms of fooding. Naturally there would be a transition. You are entering the transition. So, introduce one new item each week and stick to it at least for the week.

Thx. What can be given if the breast milk is insufficient and also if she is not taking other milk. I.e what can be given inbetween 5th and 6th month.
Brief Answer:
The amount of breast milk production depends on the baby's demand
Detailed Answer:
Thanks again for writing back.
I would need to understand why you think that breast milk is inadequate? The production of breast milk is based on the demand of the baby. If the baby's hunger is unmet, automatically the breast milk production would increase. The adequacy of breast milk production is measured by the urinary output. If the baby passes urine more than 6 times in 24 hours, consider breast milk production to be adequate.
If still in a fuss, you can feel free to initiate semisolids. They can be initiated from 4 months of age but are not recommended unless essential.
