Question: Hi,
I have too much dandruff in my hair and it has been like this for a long time
(2-3 years). Because of dandruff my head itches a lot. Also my hair is very dry
and for past six month i am experiencing a lot of hair loss and few of my hairs have
turned white. I use Head & Shoulders shampoo regularly but it doesn't help. I have
tried rubbing lemon juice also but it only make my scalp dry and itchy. Please
suggest a remedy for my problems or what medicinal shampoo should i use.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting on HCM.

I appreciate your concern regarding chronic dandruff and hair fall and i will make sure your query is resolved in a best possible way.

Usually, the common description of 'dandruff and hairloss' points towards few differential diagnosis like Seborrheic Dermatitis and Scalp psoriasis.

Though definitive diagnosis always rests upon actual clinical examination, i would like to insist you to send your photographs in the follow up question, so that i can help you in a better way.

However from your history and description,it seems you are suffering from Seborrheic dermatitis, which secondarily leads to hairfall and thus its important to treat it first hand.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of sebaceous glands chiefly affecting scalp, face ,chest etc.

Generally in my patients of Seborrheic Dermatitis, I would recommend a short course of oral antifungal drugs like ketoconazole/itraconazole and a lotion containing clotrimazole and betamethasone twice a day over scalp for few weeks to months.

Use a medicated shampoo containing ketoconazole and salicyclic acid twice a week followed by a gentle conditioner.

Take antihistaminics as required for itching.

Avoid excessive use of hair oil.

As for the hairfall, start oral supplements containing biotin and other essential vitamins and minerals (Follihair new) once a day for atleast 3-6 months.

Hope this will take care of your query.

I insist you to post your pictures in the follow up query for the better understanding otherwise if you are satisfied with the answer and feel your queries are rightly resolved you can close the answer.
