Suggest Tests To Diagnose Sleep Apnea

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Sep 2014
Question: How do you diagnose sleep apnea? What are the medical side effects? Can it also be associated with TMJ? I started off with pressure in my ear and dizziness. I went and saw an ENT for my ear. the ear was normal. I had been taking ephedrine 16mg per day for over 10 years. The ENT stated my issues were from TMJ and the effects of long term use of ephedrine. The dizziness can be really bad at night and all day. At my witts end. Now the back of my head is painful to touch. sometimes facial numbness for a short periods. like freezing feeling at a dentist. any advice wouls be helpful. thank you!!!

Brief Answer:
Pauses during snoring & choking is its major sign

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in.

Sleep apnea can be observed by asking your bed partner to observe for few changes while you sleep like there are pauses while snoring & choking followed by these pauses resulting in improper breathing.
Other symptoms are morning headache, tiredness throughout day, dry mouth & frequently waking up for urination.
Its medical side effects include
- heart stroke
- neurological problem
- spinal injury

It could be due to deviated nasal septum also which might have lead to respiratory discomfort.
Ephedrine results in mucous production which results in breathing difficulty causing sleep apnea.
As such there is no direct relation between sleep apnea & TMJ problem. Still you consult oral & maxillofacial surgeon.
Need not worry all will be fine.

Hope i answered your query
