Suggest The Ideal Dosage For Norvasc Taken For Type 2 Diabetes

I am a type 2 diabetic also taking 10mg Norvasc daily.
I have extremely swollen ankles and am wondering if I should cut back the dosage or see my GP.
Is the swelling dangerous?
Thanks.
Amlodipin, swollen ankles
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome to HCM and thank you for your question. I understand your concern.
The swelling of ankles is not dangerous, at least at the moment. In addition to this, we are aware of the fact that what is the culprit to cause this. Amlodipin (Norvasc) and other "dipins", in less frequency, have a well-known side effects of ankle swelling. In addition to this drug, I assume you have a active life and work, which requires long time of assuming standing and/or sitting up positions, which only "helps" amlodipin in ankle swelling. At this point, I would recommend you to immediately discontinue amlodipin. As I am assuming you are using amlodipin to fight high blood pressure, I would recommend you to switch to an other drug, from an other class. Therefore, a diuretic would suffice as a replacement, such as a hydrochlorthiazid once a day, which would also act on faster reducing of ankle swelling. Also, salt reduction in your diet is mandatory and a 60-minute a day physical activity, such aa walking, jogging, gym etc.
I hope I was helpful with my answer. I am glad to help, if you have follow-up questions.
Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
