Question: I have a friend that was diagnosed with myotonic dpysthopy 5 years ago. Today he is always in a wheelchair and am wondering if physical therapy would help him to regain some of the muscle in his legs. Or, is there anything we can do to make him be able to walk again? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Little can be done for him to walk again!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this myotonic dystrophy that your friend has. It is rathr unfortunate that it is a progressively debilitating disease and medical sciences have not found a way to halt, prevent or treat the damages caused by this condition. How I wish there was a way for your friend to regain his muscle power and be able to walk again? Unfortunately, there is none.

Physical therapy would help him regain some muscle strength for for real he would not be able to make any meaningful use of it as it would still be largely insufficient to compensate for the damage.

In all, there is really nothing much that can be done. I am sorry to be the one letting out this bad news!

I hope this helps. I wish your friend well. Thank you so much for using our services and please do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need need be.
