Brief Answer:
Yes you need to take methdone or burenorphine for ease

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.
Hydromorphone is an opioid. When someone takes any opioid substance for long, body becomes dependent on that opioid substance. After that if this substance is stopped suddenly it can cause withdrawal symptoms.Opioid withdrawal features are generally severe and not easily tolerable.Duration of withdrawal depends upon total quantity, duration and type of opioid taken.3 years is pretty long duration. You may have withdrawal features like body aches, watery eyes, diarrhea, fever, muscle pain, anxiety, sleep disturbance and so on.Without treatment it may last up to 6 months also.

Treatment of opioid withdrawal includes benzodiazepines(like lorazepam or clonazepan), sympatholytic drugs(like clonidine) and opioid substitute(like burenorphine or methadone) as well routine medical management.
Most of the cases for opioid withdrawal treated in hospital initially.Gradually this substitute substance taper off under medical supervision.

So someone has told you right that methadone would help.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
