Suggest Treatment For IBS In An Elderly Person

Question: I am having a dental implant in two days and have been prescribed Cleocin since I had a lot of GI distress last year when my tooth was removed and took Amoxicillin. I also had a total hip replacement last XXXXXXX so I do need to take an antibiotic. Will Cleocin be as harsh on my GI system as Amoxicillin? Or is there some other
antibiotic I should consider since I do have IBS and am 66 years old.

Brief Answer:
Third generation cephalosporins like Cefixime or Cefuroxime can be taken.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Firstly thanks or choosing HealthcareMagic for your query,
Have gone through your details and I appreciate your concern.
As per your question like Amoxicillin one of the main side efect of Clindamycin is severe Gastrointestinal distress.
Though Amoxicilllin and clindamycin are drug of choice,But as you have a history of Irritable bowel syndrome and severe Gastro intestinal distress Third generation Cephalosporin like Cefixime or Cefuroxime auxetil can be taken.
As pe your question Yes clindamycin can also cause severe gastritis,And dyspepsia.
Cases of G.I distress with Cephalosporins are far less then Amoxicillin or clindamycin.
Though they are not over the counter and you would need a prescription.

Tab Nexium 40mg once daily along with A good probiotic should be once daily while taking these antibiotics.

I hope i answere you query well,Feel free to ask follow up question.

Thanks.
