Question: I think I have IBS or bloated colon, is it curable
doctor
Answered by Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis (29 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
comes and goes...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

IBS is a chronic condition that comes and goes, thus it's not curable. IBS management requires changing the diet to avoid being bloated. This is not the same for all patients. Some patients may become bloated with increased fiber, while others may find relief in fiber. The same may apply for other food choices.

Generally patients with prominent diarrhea symptoms benefit from less fiber in their food. The opposite applies for patients with constipation.

Some drugs may relieve the symptoms. Such drugs are mebeverine, trimebutine, otilonium and various spasmolytics.

You won't find a permanent cure for this condition. Reducing psychological stress helps a lot!

Kind Regards!

What is spastic colon?

Answered by Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
spastic colon = irritable bowel syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Let me start from the easy part... spastic colon means IBS.

A bloated colon cannot stay bloated forever. As I've written before, this condition comes and goes.

Constipation is usually treated with increased fiber in the diet. Drinking enough water is essential. Going to the toilet at specific times also helps. Physical activity is another factor that affects intestinal motility. Increased physical activity promotes regular bowel movements.

Thank you Dr. Zografakis,

This is for my son and he has commented for many years about the right side of his abdomen being more distended or bloated than the other side.

I am trying to help him find a diagnosis to his pain. He has been depressed due to the pain he has been having on an ongoing basis.

He also took an over course of antibiotics related to prostatitis and has pain from that also.

He doesn't like living in such pain at the young age of 32 and pretty successful.

He has inherited GAD from me and not sure how/if this is playing into it.
He has also battled insomnia for many years and I know his immune system is not where it could be.

Trying to give him some answers since he has felt like giving up.

Brief Answer:
GAD is very important for IBS

Detailed Answer:
Our intestines are interconnected with our psychological status. Too much psychological stress may cause diarrhea or constipation, bloating, gas, pain...
Patients with GAD commonly have intestinal symptoms. And patients with IBS are commonly worse when psychological factors affect their intestines.

Perhaps your son should focus on GAD more. A psychiatrist should help him.

Kind Regards!
