Suggest Treatment For Page's Syndrome

I was tested for pheochromocytoma but it came back negative
I want to know what Page Syndrome is. I want to know how to be treated. I want to know if I have to stay atenol forever and finally what diet restrictions should I be aware of?
yes you may need to continue atenolol
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
I understand your concern. This is a rare diagnosis and information is limited.
In 1935, Dr XXXXXXX H. Page, was the first to observe a very particular form of paroxysmal (sudden episodes) hypertension with sympathetic (a type of hormone) discharge in the absence of pheochromocytoma (a tumor producing these hormones). Other symptoms may include flushing, sweating and palpitations.
These symptoms are probably due to sudden firing of these hormone controlling centers in the brain. Sometimes after emotional trigger, sometimes without.
Nevertheless, it is considered a benign disorder and atenolol is the drug of choice. Usually leads to complete resolution of symptoms. You may need to continue it lifelong.
You don't need to restrict diet unless there is documented triggering of any episode by any specific food.
Hope this helps. I will be available for followup.
Regards

Most Doctors at emerg and ambulance people don't know about this disorder.
How is this different between panic attacks.
My BP is usually 117/79 or 123/80 unless I have a "surge" and than my bp goes dangerously high and in fact I had a heart attack last summer before they discovered this. Yet my heart is fine and no damage was done because I called 911 immediately.
If this is emotionally triggered - and I work in a stressful job - is that a risk?
If this is a rare disorder - it will be difficult to find information.
I am concerned about risks of atenonol long term. My family has a history of diabetes 2 and I understand this can be a risk with this medication.
Thanks, XXXXXXX
Also, should I be referred to an oncologist since this is not connected to my heart?
similarities exist with panic attack
Detailed Answer:
There are some similarities with panic attack as both are catecholamine hormone mediated but hypertension is usually not seen in panic attack and the emotional component is much more.
Stressful job may precipitate attacks in Page's syndrome also, but if you are already on atenolol then probably it will not precipitate.
Atenolol is a safe drug and many patients with hypertension and cardiac diseases take it for lifelong.
If somebody has diabetes, we have to be cautious about atenolol but just a family history is not of concern.
As pheochromocytoma has been ruled out, there is no need for further oncology referrals.

Will I be okay to do my job with Page's Syndrome even if I am on medication?
I ate a large amount of packaged licorice before my test - will that mess with the results?
Is Page Syndrome a heart issue or a hormonal issue?
IF I were to have a referral would it be for oncology or cardiologist?
I am currently 20 lbs overweight. If I lost weight - would Page Syndrome exist?
Will I have this condition my entire life?
yes you can continue your job
Detailed Answer:
You just need to be on regular follow up to ensure that everything is fine.
This disease is due to unexplained rise of catecholamine hormones but the stimulus comes from the brain. These hormones then act on the cardiovascular system. Hence this is in the domain of cardiologist and neurologist. If you can lose some weight then it may help to control the disease.
I don't think liquorice changed anything.
The disease may not exist for your lifetime. After months to years it may subside. Very difficult to predict as very little is known about the condition.
All the best.
Regards
