Suggest Treatment For UTI That Is Not Responding To Ciprofloxacin

Question: Hello, I have been receiving treatment for bacterial vaginosis and a UTI. I think the BV treatment is working, but the UTI is still very, very uncomfortable. I was prescribed a 3-day course of Cipro for it, and am now on my last day. I thought I should see more improvement by this point? I was told that Cipro is very strong and typically very effective, so I am a bit concerned. The results of my urine culture are not in yet, so I'm not sure if that will help. In the past I used to take Macrobid, which always helped me, but for some reason the doctor would not prescribe that. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
thanks for sending the question.
Ciprofloxacin is a very good antibiotic for typical urinary tract infections. Sometimes, however the bacteria causing the infection may be resistant even to Cipro.
For this reason I would make sure that you follow up on the culture results. Also since you're still having symptoms you should talk about this with your doctor.your doctor may consider putting on an alternative antibiotic for an additional few days.
Thanks again for sending your question. It does sound like the urinary tract infection has not completely resolved and for this reason I think you should follow up on the culture results.
Sincerely,
