Brief Answer:
diet changes, water and acute laxative

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Lazy bowel is thought to be related to the inability of the muscles in the colon to contract appropriately to help expel the stool.

It is commonly due to the overuse of laxatives which cause damage to the nerves and muscles in the colon.

Treatment involves: (1) ruling out other causes such as high calcium, low potassium, thyroid disease, side effect of other medications, diabetes, mass in the intestines

(2)dietary change- this means whole meal, whole wheat bread , biscuits and flour, whole grain cereals, brown rice and brown pasta

five portions of fruits and vegetables daily. A portion of fruit is one large fruit (Apple , pear , banana, orange) or 2 smaller fruits (eg plums) or a cup of very small fruits (grapes, berries) or a tbs of dried fruits (raisons)

If you are not able to use enough dietary fiber, use a fiber supplement such a metamucil (the sugar free has more fiber). This is started low and increased weekly till the results are good.

Fiber is not a laxative and will not induce immediate bowel movements but will help with regular movements and should be continued even if there is no immediate effect

(3) need to take at least 8 glasses of water daily

may need to discontinue milk and milk products if constipating

Tea and coffee cannot be counted because they actually cause fluid loss

(4)in this acute stage , if you are very uncomfortable , laxatives may be needed even if the overuse caused the problem

Examples are senna, dulcolax, biscolax, lactulose, castor oil (15 ml).

One of these may be available over the counter

Summary: (1) rule out other causes
(2)diet changes and water use very very important. Need to be done consistently
(3)in acute stage use a laxative for relief

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
