Suggest Treatment For A Lump In The Middle Finger

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Oct 2017
Question: What is this lump in the middle finger? Nothing special in x-ray, utrasound, mri, just a bit swollen. No liquids inside, puncture attempted twice. It's hard near the joint, soft otherwise (swollen parts?). Really painful if I hit it somewhere, otherwise mild occasional pain. Some days it's more swollen, sometimes really peaceful and smaller. I have had it for two years, no major changes. Originally it did appear quite fast, in a few days.

Brief Answer:
Soft tissue swelling.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have seen the attached image. The swelling in the middle finger that you have can be a tendon sheath swelling like a ganglion or inclusion cyst or a sebaceous cyst. Can be due to inflammation also. In case there is any infection then the swelling may become painful. A close examination and FNAC can help in determination of the exact cause. You can consult an orthopedician for it.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

If this was a cyst, shouldn't xray, mri or ultra sound give some indication about it? All those scans have been made, and only some swelling detected. A local orthopedician has investigated this, but has no clue.

Brief Answer:
FNAC can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
A cyst should be detected on MRI or can show a soft tissue swelling only. FNAC can help in detection.
Hope my answer is helpful.
