Posted on Sat, 8 Apr 2017
Question: Hello, I'm XXXXXXX I'm having a problem with digestion. I eat and I feel like my food just sits there and I become bloated, gassy, crampy and distended. I was reading up on Betaine HCL thinking that may be the case but don't want to diagnose myself. Have a history of GERD

I have never had my thyroid checked also. My body did go through lots of stress last year as I was attacked in my home and scared out of my mind so I have seen weight gain since and also its just not coming off and I am an avid runner and workout 5 times a week

Brief Answer:
Stress related gastritis and indigestion

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can understand your concern on your symptoms.
1) You have indigestion related symptoms along with symptoms of GERD.
2) Indigestion would be due to secretion of acid in stomach more than normal secondary to stress.
3) GERD would lead to reflux of this acid back into esophagus and produce inflammation in lower part of esophagus.
4) Indigestion would be secondary to gastritis.
5) You should undergo upper GI endoscopy to confirm the diagnosis along with to check extent and severity of disease.
6) Once confirmed, you can take anti-acidity medications (Pantoprazole), digestive intestinal enzyme supplementations (Unienzyme) to relieve your symptoms.
7) In view of excessive stress and its adverse effect on body, it is advisable to consult physician/psychiatrist to start anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medication.
8) Also, you must avoid spicy, over cooked, partially cooked, unhygienic food and try to reduce fat content in your diet.

Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you.
Have a nice day!

Thank you for.answering. I had an endoscopy some years ago and that's when they diagnosed me with Gerd. It subsided for several years and I was able to get my body back on track. It's only as of recent in the last year that I have seen this. It's why I thought maybe it was my thyroid considering I get inconsistent sleep and also weight gain. I do see a psychologist and take turmeric pill for the ptsd and emotional issues as I am not a fan of prescription meds

Brief Answer:
Thyroid function has less effect on stomach

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I apologize for later reply.
It is less likely to have impact of thyroid function on stomach acid secretion.
GERD can be due to stress also.
It is advisable for you to continue medications for PTSD, take medications for GERD whenever you would have symptoms of it and treat indigestion with supportive medications.
