ORS and tylenol mainstay of treatment
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Your son probably is suffering from a viral infection which is responsible for the cough, sore throat and fever. Some children are more prone to such infections. In addition he could has a diarrhoea which is probably also of viral origin.
You need to give tylenol to bring down the temperature. You can also give tepid sponging with lukewarm water. If the temperature does not get relieved with tylenol, you would have to give Meftal P syrup (mefenamic acid) which is more effective in relieving temperature. It can be given at a minimum interval of 6 hours. But please note that it is a prescription medicine. So, you would need to get it prescribed by your pediatrician first.
Giving steam inhalation would help in diluting the cough and would give him relief. Antibiotics are not required. Such viral infections generally resolve in 5-7 days irrespective of the use of antibiotics.
For the diarrhoea, ORS (oral rehydration solution) is the mainstay of treatment. Just dissolve a full XXXXXXX of ORS in a litre of water and give him sip by sip frequently so that he does not lose salt and water from his body. Loss of solutes and water may give rise to dehydration. If the frequency of passage of urine comes down or if the child becomes lethargic, you would have to rush the child to a hospital. Giving ORS frequently would prevent development of dehydration.
Avoid giving him milk for a week. Zinc supplements would be helpful.
Hope this helps.
