Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: Started having upper abdominal pain 2 weeks ago especially when after getting up after lying down for a short while. Symptoms have eased but not gone away after 2 weeks. What may be causing this? I am 74 years old and have CMML-1 leukemia. I also have an enlarged aorta.

Brief Answer:
See your Doctor and get an Ultrasound done

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX. With the history you give it would be prudent to see your Doctor or GP and get an Ultrasound done. It would be able to tell if there is anything wrong and most importantly give an idea of the size of your abdominal aorta. If the Radiologist is unable to tell the size with confidence on Ultrasound then a CT or MRI would be required. But it would also depend on when you got your last CT or MRI. Only after that can we decide as to what treatment would be required. It could also be minor problems like Gastritis which your Doctor would be able to manage easily. So please see your Doctor and let us know your reports for us to advice you best. Take care.

I have already had a CT scan to measure the aorta size. I meet with the surgeon next week. Is it possible that problems with the aorta are connected to my abdominal pain?

Brief Answer:
Yes it is rare but possible. See your Doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX. There is a slim chance that your aorta could be the cause of pain. This happens if it suddenly increases in size or if it develops a contained leak. But most likely it would be something else. The commoner causes could be gastritis or Gastrointestinal related issues. Do not worry. All can be managed but first we must establish the cause with a physical examination and maybe an Ultrasound. Take care.
