Question: hello
I am a 47 yr old woman who has been drinking wine for too long probably 7-10 a week for years. My lft are abnormal and I fear cirrhosis. My ast is 45 alt 48 and ggt 94. I was tested a couple months ago and my get was 100 alt 60 ast 45 I only had a few drinks since my first blood test so i thought it would have been lower. I am hypothyroid with hashimotos Ultrasound showed liver is normal in size and echo texture no focal lesion. no billary dilation. What does this mean? I am having a ct scan in a couple days. I have stopped drinking forever

Brief Answer:
It means you were suffering from hepatitis

Detailed Answer:
Good morning Mr. Shelbail
Sorry to hear about your ill health.
The elevated liver enzymes can be explained from your alcohol drinking behavior. But before doing so, I would like to rule out certain other diseases like hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections by doing HBsAg and Anti HCV blood tests. In view of your Hashimotos disease and hypothyroidism, I would like to rule out autoimmune cause for liver disease by doing a full auto antibody profile in the same blood sample. If I rule out these diseases, then I am pretty sure your lab results will normalize after cessation of wine. Your liver was normal on ultrasound which was really reassuring.
Please continue alcohol abstinence for your good health

Thank you. I will ask my Dr about these tests. I just thought that since I have only had a few drinks in the last couple months my enzymes would be normal but perhaps this can take more than a few months? I suppose total abstinence would make them go down quicker as well?

Brief Answer:
yes

Detailed Answer:
Yes I expect that your enzymes would resolve to normal if they are purely because of alcohol intake rather than other causes that I discussed in the previous post

Best regards
