Suggest Treatment For Abnormal Heart Pulse Along With Slight Pressure In Throat

default
Posted on Sat, 9 May 2015
Question: Have been experiencing abnormal (for me) chest/heart pulses, beat rhythm, etc, but it is not accompanied by chest pains, however, there seems to be a bit of slight pressure at the base of my throat. It came on approx. 2 weeks ago while working in the Socal desserts, was very windy, and had seemed to contract an immediate allergy condition (sinus), which is not normal for me either. Here's the catch....maybe. I'm 64, and got wrapped up with some younger friends the preceding Fri and consumed way too much straight vodka. Went down sooo smooth, yeah well, the next thing I know I wake up in my bed the next morning with no recollection of how I got there. Other than that, I am barely a social drinker. Anyway, these symptoms lasted for approx 10 days. Did go to my PCP and everything, including an EKG checked out good, and I am scheduled for a stress test in 2 weeks. The symptoms went away about the time my sinus condition cleared up. I was good and back to working out at the gym on the days I was home. Then came another stupid move from this past Sun, I accepted an invitation to another neighbor's BBQ and got coaxed into sampling/drinking various types, in copious quantities, of craft beer. This time I remember making it home, but now the same symptoms have reappeared, although I am just now sensing things are getting better. Does this sound like a heart condition to you, or just too old to be doing stupid stuff anymore? And the pressure I mentioned at the base of my throat had me thinking Thyroid? Thanks, YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
2 possibilities

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your query. I think I would be able to help you.
The symptoms of the query are quite suggestive of 2 possible causes - 1. A severe gastritis and 2. Arrhythmia
The alcoholic binge are the only reason why I am considering the gastritis. The best way to avoid this is to avoid the bouts of alcohol.
The possibility of arrhythmia is strong. The ekg would probably be normal. You will need a Holter monitoring to confirm the diagnosis.
finally, there is always the possibility that the symptoms can be explained by a simple condition - drunk state with post alcohol symptoms.
I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.

Thank you for your reply. I was wondering if tachyarrhythmia could be a possibility as well, based on the sinus issue contracted from my stay in the southern dessert, and the fact that its symptoms can disappear once the influence is gone, in this case.....the infection/virus of the sinus issue?

I have been to the gym twice during these ordeals and performed full workouts that I would consider medium to aggressive, and included 30 mins of cardio, without complications. Would this rule out a heart issue?

I am good now, I think this one has ran its course. But did go to bed last night with it.....and it was still happening when I woke in the a.m. Any thoughts? XXXX

Brief Answer:
already considered

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your response.
I have already considered tachyarrhythmia when I take about arrhythmia in my original response. It's a type of arrhythmia.
also, just being able to do exercise does not rule out a arrhythmia. Arrhythmia can come and go. So, as I said, holter monitoring is needed.
As you are comfortable now, I suggest that you follow through with the tests. And avoid alcohol. That was common to both your episodes.

Thank you again for your response. I believe that satisfies my issue. But, with all due respect, I have always been advised by those in the medical profession to ask for a second opinion. Is it possible for all of our written exchange to be reviewed and commented on by another one of your colleagues? That would then allow me to put this issue to rest for the time being. Thank you very much, XXXX
