Suggest Treatment For Accessory Navicular Syndrome

Posted on Wed, 1 Apr 2015
Question: My daughter has navicualr accessory syndrome and has been out of soccer six months she just started running ( although not yet full speed) and doing soccer drills again. Sharp cuts in her first session back casued some pain in navicular and feet were sore next day but no acute pain. How long do we go like this to see if this conservative treatment will work?
her feet feel overall better but still some soreness her rehab has been slowed by pain in her knees caused from growing. It just seems a long time to be done and she got scared when she felt sharp pain in her navicular from hard cutting first session back. She is not yet back at practice as she can only run 70 percent speed but has been doing "light" drills on ball. Overall she has some soreness between back to back work outs but better than before. She has really only been jogging and light sprinting a week now. But we were worried about the sharp pain she felt in first soccer session. She is highly competetive soccer player and has really been down a long time now not sure how much longer we give rehab before consdidering a surgery?

Brief Answer:
I would like to see her x rays

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. I can understand your frustration. Asscessory Navicular is a difficult problem to treat. Becasue some time there is associated weak foot muscles and flat feet. Conservative treatment can be tried for 6 months and still if pain persist than we should think of surgery . I would like to see your daughter's x Ray of feet to tell you if she will be benefitted from surgery or not.
Please send me her. x Rays. Meanwhile she should modify her shoes by meeting a occupational therapist. They will provide her a n insole that can be applied in the feet. In most patients it gives good pain relief.
I am waiting for her X Rays, I will try my best to help you,
thanks

they are going to give her some kind of semi custom orthodic for her shoes and or soccer cleats. We just bought her a very good pair of running shoes (brooks) and they have great arch support and more lateral firmness than her previous shoes and she says they feel very good on her feet.

As far as x rays I will get them sometime this week. From what I was told it seemed she has a raisin sized extra bone. They said it was small. It sounds like the type 1. She does have a high arch - not flat feet. But her knee moves inward a little and she tends to roll her foot in a little. We have been working on her balance a lot. One leg - I think her right is most unstable and she has to work harder to balance. That knee goes in a little. She has the accessory bone on both feet. I will try and get you the x rays
