Suggest Treatment For Accidental Ingestion Of High Doses Of BP Medication By A Child

Posted on Wed, 5 Aug 2015
Question: Hello, I accidentally gave my 8 year old son a double dose of my husband's blood pressure medication enalap/Hctz 10-25mg. He weighs 50 lbs. He takes by two clonidine 0.1 mg. each night and the BP med was sitting in its spot. Poor parenting I know. This happened two nights ago 7/13/15 and I didn't discover this until about an hour after the fact. I called poison control immediately and they said to watch him for dizziness, sweating, etc. But that he should be fine. No trip to the er necesarry. I sat and watched him all night and he seemed fine. Yesterday was a normal day. Today is a different day, he is lethargic, pale and has vomited once. Is it the med or just a coincidence. I am so worried.

Brief Answer:
Not related to meds, food poisoning/gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through the medical history of your son and understood your concerns.

1. Since the accident occurred 2 days ago, snd nothing happened then no need to worry . Luckily, nothing bad happened to him.

When antihypertensive medications are accidentally taken on a double dosage, I advise my patients to observe for the signs of low blood pressure like fatigue, sweating ( as your doctor advised to watch in your child.

2. With regards to his new symptoms of vomiting and being lethargic, they might be suggestive for possible acute gastroenteritis.

However, I advise to check his blood pressure (bp). If too low then send your child to the er immediately.

Otherwise, I advise to give him :
- plenty of water
- probiotics for vomiting
- light diet (banana, rice, toast, yogurt, etc)

If no improvement, should send him to ER for immediate evaluation and treatment.

Follow good hygienic measures especially when preparing his foods.

Wish fast recovery!
