Suggest Treatment For Acid Reflux

default
Posted on Sat, 28 Nov 2015
Question: Thurs. night I laid down after a snack of a brownie and glass of milk. About a half hour later I started to
feel heartburn and it lasted about 3 hrs. even after taking 6 XXXXXXX Seltzer chewables. I also felt nauseated.
This was the worst I ever felt with heartburn and in fact have it very infrequently. Feeling okay since.
Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
It can be simple acid reflux..use antacids and motility agents

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic!

Based on the history you have shared, it seems to acid reflux which may occur with certain foods. Unless it isn't chronic or long standing, gastritis or acid peptic disease secondary to any gastric ulcer is less likely. Here are certain measures which will help.

Use antacids like omeperazole or pantoprazole before meals. In my clinic, I suggest 40 mg before breakfast.

Using motility agents like domperidone will help with rapid stomach emptying and decreased refurge or heart burn or vomiting.

Don't lye flat right after meals but take brisk walk or stay upright for almost half an hour after meals.

Avoid spicy, greasy, oily foods as well as fizzy drinks. Avoid too much quantity if hot beverages.

Hoping you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.

I guess what concerned me the most was the length of time it lasted and the
nausea which can of course mean a heart problem. So in a nutshell can nausea
be a part of heartburn?

Brief Answer:
For reassurance you can have an EKG

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Thanks for sharing the details.

Based on your history, it is less likely to be related to your heart. Heart burn term is used as a misnomer, means it is used as pain or burning or oesophagitis or acid regurge, and has nothing to do with heart. and nausea can be part of gastritis or stomach pains and doesnt only indicate cardiac origin. If you want to get assured about whether it is cardiac or not, look for few warning signs, if it radiates to left arm or left jaw or left shoulder, if it is associated with chest tightness or severe sweating and if worst chest pain is felt of life time, it needs cardiac evaluation with an EKG. Meanwhile keep managing as stomach pains relating to acid secretion or regurge. Hoping you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
