HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Yes, acute diarrhea (recently started) is usually contagious because it is caused by either viral or bacterial infection most commonly.
It can be spread fecal orally. This means that if any very small amount of the virus remains on the hand after a bowel movement, this can be spread to food or drink or a surface.

If another person comes into contact with the infected food/drink or surface then they can be infected.

This is the reason that repeated and very very careful handwashing is advised, it prevents spread.

In terms of treatment: (1) hold off all solid food till there is a 4 hour window with no diarrhea.
When this 4 hours passes, start with small amounts of dry food such as biscuits, bread, dry rice

(2)make sure to drink a lot of fluids to avoid getting dehydrated. The best fluids would be sport drinks such as gatorade or an oral rehydration drink
These would give you back both fluids and electrolytes

Drink slowing and in small amounts initially to make sure that you would tolerate it

(3)use probiotics- these can be used on their own or in certain yogurts
They help to shorten the diarrhea course

(4)medications such as pepto bismol or lomotil would also slow down the diarrhea

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
