Posted on Mon, 21 Nov 2016
Question: I've had diarrhea almost a week now. Seems it's getting a little better. Been taking Lopreamide for it & some bismuth. Also, one of my dogs just got over having it too. I'm 61 male. General good health.

Brief Answer:
Acute Diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Diarrhea affecting master and the dog is likely to be caused by viral infection ( e.g Coronavirus,Rota virus) which is usually self-limiting.Only treatment required is replacement of fluid and electrolyte loss by taking oral re-hydration solution (2 table spoonfuls in a glass of water every 6 hourly till diarrhea stops). Anti-diarrheal agent like loperamide remains useful but avoid if you have fever,as it may prolong febrile dysentery.
Bismuth subsalicylate may reduce symptoms of diarrhea but should not be used to treat patients with renal impairment because of the risk of bismuth encephalopathy. Avoid if your serum creatinine is above normal range.
You can also take probiotics containing Lactobacillus Sporegens, Strep Faeecalis etc ( e.g Bifilac or Sporolac) or simple yogurt.
