Brief Answer:
Motivation should be sustained to quit alcohol completely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related doubts

I can understand your concern. First of all I'd like to tell you that drinking behaviour depends upon a lot of factors. Behavioural factors play an important role in drinking. Individuals should have proper and sustained motivation to quit. Most people tend to maintain the alcohol free state for months but due to poor motivation they start taking alcohol again.

So most probably due to poor motivation and also increased craving he has started taking alcohol again. Acamprosate is an anti craving drug and is effective drug in reducing craving, but as he is taking alcohol also along with medicines so effectiveness of medicines is reducing. The drug works best when individuals don't take alcohol. Prior to starting the medicine individuals should stop alcohol completely and in such situation the medicine works best.

Yes the medicines are proper and this combination helps to reduce the craving, but since as I have mentioned a lot of factors are involved in alcohol abuse so this is the reason he started taking alcohol again.

Yes the timing should help but don't expect big change. Try to motivate him to quit. If he gets motivated to not to take alcohol then medicines will help and he can quit the alcohol again.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.
