default
Posted on Mon, 9 Jan 2017
Question: My wife's left eye is irritated and hurts from the pressure and it feels like there is something in her eye. She has allergies and takes a rescue inhaler for asthma. Wearing her glasses is uncomfortable from the pressure. It feels better to keep the eye (left) closed. She is not sleeping well. There is noticeable swelling. Recommendations?

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Antihistamines like zyrtec can cause dry eyes and as a result foreign body sensation, redness and itching in the eye. However, that is just one of the possible causes. The eye needs to be examined clinically and via a slit lamp for the presence of a foreign body, corneal erosion or ulceration and possible infection. Intra ocular pressure via tonometery can also be measured. Topical lubricants or artificial tears in combination with antibacterial eye drops can be advised by her ophthalmologist. Wash the eye , keep it dry/ covered and consult an ophthalmologist or your GP as soon as possible.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
