Suggest Treatment For Allergic Reaction To Kiwi
Question: I am allergic to kiwi. Recently I ingested a drink that contains kiwi powder. After about 10 days I started breaking out in very itchy flat, red bumps all over my toro and back. This has been going on for 2 weeks. When I realized the kiwi powder might be at fault, I immediately stopped the drink (Ionix Supreme by Isagenix) That was 6 days ago but I still have the rash. Can kiwi powder in the system be the cause?

Brief Answer:
Allergic reaction can last for weeks.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
It is probably not the kiwi powder in your system that is causing the rash to persist. When you have an allergic reaction to a substance, your body produces histamines and other substances called cytokines that cause the rash and itching.
Once you stop your exposure to the substance, it can still take a few weeks for the itching and rash to resolve. You can use anti-histamines by mouth and cool compresses to help with the itching. If it does not resolve in 2-3 weeks after you stopped the kiwi then you will need to see your doctor.

Thank you so much for your answer. It was very helpful! Can you recommend an antihistamine that doesn't cause sleepiness? A stronger cream than Benadryl?
Brief Answer:
loratadine, cetirizine, fexofenadine/hydrocortisone cream
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your follow up.
The non-sedating anti-histamines are loratadine, cetirizine and fexofenadine. Any of them should help with the itching and not cause sedation. The topical benadryl cream does not work very well but you could try hydrocortisone cream, if the itching is severe. If you do, you should not use it for more than two weeks because it is a steroid cream.
Keeping lotion on the skin, avoiding friction when possible and keeping the skin cool will also help with the itching.
I hope you are feeling better soon.
