Suggest Treatment For Allergic Rhinitis In A Child

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Mar 2017
Question: : I had very bad allergies when I was a child. I started a landscaping company 8 years ago and ever since my allergies have been much better, but springtime pollen still gives me occasional trouble. My wife and I have a 6 and a half month old baby boy and he has been a little fussy from a stuffy nose for a couple days now. He is still very active, good temperature, and does not appear to be sick to me. I told my wife's mother I think he just has allergies and a stuffy nose, but she keeps telling me a child cannot have allergies before the age of 1 years old? Am I wrong? Also he is a breastfed baby.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

Allergic reactions require exposure and then sensitization to allergens. To be sensitized, the patient must be exposed to allergens for a period of time.Sensitization to outdoor allergens usually occurs when a child is older than 3-5 years. Sensitization to highly allergenic indoor allergens can occur in children younger than 2 years. This is typically associated with significant exposures to indoor allergens (e.g, molds, furry animals, cockroaches, dust mites ).
Allergic rhinitis-like symptoms (runny nose, blocked nose, or sneezing apart from a cold) may begin as early as age 18 months.
So,there are less chances for a your baby who is around 6 and half month old to have Allergic Rhinitis.

Your baby might be suffering from Stuffy nose due to Cold weather or mild viral infection.

For the treatment of stuffy nose, you should take following measures:
Use a humidifier or a cool-mist vaporizer in your child's bedroom when he's sleeping, resting, or playing in the room.
Saline nose drops to loosen thick nasal mucus.
Keep your baby's nasal passages clear with a rubber-bulb syringe.
Keep your baby away from anyone who's sick.
Wash your hands before feeding or touching your baby.
Clean your baby's toys often.
Also keep the baby's bedding dust free.Avoid any collected water in the house to prevent molds.

Hope this answers your question.I would be happy to answer if you have any follow-up questions.Take care.
