Question: was bitten by a dear tick about 1 week ago. Near the site there is a small red rash that looks and feels like poison ivy. Need to be checked for Lyme disease?

Tick bite produces inflammatory reactions that may feel like poison ivy. However as you were bit by a deer tick it is known to transmit some of the important diseases like
1. Lyme Disease which is a bacterial infection caused by B. burgdorferi. The classic sign is the rash which is red and warm, but it is generally painless and the rash occurs at the site of the tick bite between three to 30 days.
It is a diagnosed by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test and confirmed by Western blot test and olymerase chain reaction (PCR).
2. Human Anaplasmosis (HA) is a bacterial disease caused by A. phagocytophilum. It is also transmitted by deer ticks, the same ticks that transmit Lyme disease.
This is diagnosed by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays are being used to detect A. phagocytophilum DNA.
3. Babesiosis is a protozoan infection transmitted by deer tick bite and it is diagnosed by examining blood specimens under a microscope and seeing Babesia parasites inside red blood cells.
The aforementioned diseases are most common diseases transmitted by the deer tick bite. I would suggest you to undergo these lab investigations after discussing with your treating doctor to confirm your diagnosis and to take adequate treatment.
