Suggest Treatment For Amoebiasis Infection In Stomach
I have taken metronidazole for 10 days followed by diloxinade fuorate for 10 days..i got relief from stomach pain after passing stool but not 100%. Yesterday I have taken a stool test and it shows EH cyst present...why after taking a complete course for amoebiasis is still not effective? I have planned to see a gastro..what can I expect and is there any thing to worry about?
Treatment effective if stool test done after 14 days show no EH cysts

Hi,
Thank you for writing into health care magic.
This is Dr.Riyanka, glad to answer your query.
Entamoeba hystolytica is the causative organism for your bowel infection and is a parasite. It occurs in two stages, trophozites which is motile and is only active in the host and is sensitive to antibiotic therapy and the cyst stage that is not motile but is very resistant to therapy.
Taking metronidazole and diloxanide furoate as prescribed to you usually eradicates all parasites in trophozite stage and most of them in the cyst stage. The problem with cysts is that they are a resistant form and it is possible that the cysts are still being eradicated in stools.
To know the efficacy of treatment, stool tests are to be done at least 14 days after completion of diloxanide furoate to show absence of cysts. There is nothing to worry and if cysts are still present after 14 days of treatment then your doctor might prescribe a different medication which is given in case of resistant infection. Stomach discomfort will get better in a week or two.
If 14 days are not over after treatment then it is better you get your stool test repeated.
Please take precautions to avoid contamination of food and water with human feces and do not eat food at unhygienic places.
