Brief Answer:
Goiter

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about your daughter having an enlarged thyroid gland and a normal thyroid blood work. This is frequently referred to as a goiter. This is an enlargement of the thyroid gland possibly from lack of iodine or from a disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis. These conditions are benign but she may need thyroid supplementation sometime in the future.

I agree with her getting an ultrasound to be sure there are no unusual spots that may indicate possible thyroid cancer. But this is not common and if found is easily treated.

In summary
1. goiter common condition
2. Normal thyroid function no treatment
3. Abnormal thyroid function needs thyroid replacement therapy
4. Ultrasound to rule out any hot spots possible cancer

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions

In your expert opinion is it cancer? Or possibility of it? In a young woman?

Brief Answer:
Extremely low risk of cancer

Detailed Answer:
I do not think your daughter has cancer. It is extremely rare in young adults. I do agree with having her check though to be absolutely sure. If it were cancer the good news is that it is easily treated and cured.

But I can reassure you again that the chance of cancer is extremely low
