Posted on Tue, 22 Aug 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,
I am going through an anal fissure problem. Its been a month and I am already on medication.

I don't think my medicines are curing much.

I am following fruits and vegetables diet. However I would like to have a proper diet plan from you if you can mention "WHAT NOT TO EAT" and WHAT TO EAT".

I need to know "what not to eat" first then "what to eat".

Look forward to your reply and help.

Brief Answer:
Fibre Rich Diet

Detailed Answer:
Greetings!!

Thanks for contacting healthcare Magic.

Bowel movements are commonly painful with fissures, and to get rid of this problem, the first step is to avoid or correct constipation. So changing the diet and eating pattern helps in prevention and cure of the problem.

The dietary guidelines for prevention and cure of fissure include:

•     Fruits are rich sources of fibers and antioxidants and should be taken on daily basis. Include natural laxatives like papaya, oranges, grapefruit and cantaloupe and pears. Prefer whole fruits over the juices.
•     Vegetables are also a good source of fiber. Green leafy vegetables are rich in fiber and antioxidants, and improve digestion. Including cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach etc. in diet. Other vegetables like tomato, cauliflower, turnip, carrot etc. should be used regularly. In case of active piles avoid all root vegetables except radish and carrot.
•     Add all types of salads and vegetables to your everyday meals. Green leafy vegetables are especially good. Other options are sprouts, add a variety like Brussels sprouts, wheat germ sprouts etc
•     Whole Grains like barley, corn, oats, ragi, brown rice, amaranth and sorghum should be included in the daily diet in various forms. Avoid the refined cereals like white rice, refined wheat flour and its products.
•     Use beans like rajmah, channa, soy etc. regularly in the diet.
•     Avoid caffeine containing foods. Excessive use of coffee, tea and chocolates aggravates the symptoms. Limit the intake of such foods to one serving per day.
•     Restrict spices and oily food in the diet. Limit fat intake to 4-5 tsp. per day.
•     Keep a check on the intake on bakery items and processed food.
•     Avoid foods at extreme temperatures.
•     Too much use of carbonated beverages, papads, pickles, chutneys and fast food is associated with increased risk.
•     Follow a healthy eating pattern, avoid over fasting, taking heavy meals during evenings, excessive alcohol and too spicy foods.
•     Increase the fluid intake; include fresh lime juice, fresh clear soups, plain buttermilk, lemon grass water and tender coconut water in the diet.
•     Unhealthy lifestyle is also associated with increased risk of developing Piles. Regular exercises and avoiding smoke and alcohol goes a long way in prevention and cure of fissure.
•     Take sufficient and proper sleep.

Hope this would help.

Brief Answer:
Detailed answer is given below

Detailed Answer:
You can safely consume Rajmah, Chana and soy as they are rich in soluble fiber.
Studies have proved that soluble fibers have a property to absorb water and forms a gel like substance, this helps stool to pass smoothly through your bowls and improves the consistency. The fermentation of one type of soluble fiber, known as prebiotics, in the large intestine can also help maintain a healthy gut by increasing its number of good bacteria.
But soak these for at least 10-12 hours so as to ensure better digestibility.

Thanks and Regards
Neethu
