Suggest Treatment For Anemia In An Infant
Question: My fourth son is 1 year old and was found to be mildy anaemic - Hemoglobin was 10.8. He is also pretty small for his age lass than the third percentile for weight and height and head circumference. He seems happy and well developed, almost walking, very social and says mama dada etc... . We took him to the doctor and she said to give him polycose powder and iron drops but the visit was so quick I'm not sure of the doses. Also, I would have thought he might need more tests since he is so small. DOes he need more tests? How much Iron and polycose do I need to give him?
Brief Answer:
Iron dosage is 1mg/kg per day

Dear Mr XXXXXXX
The dosage of Iron Is 1mg of Elemental Iron for every kiolgramme of body weight once a day.
1/2 teaspoon of Polycose powder added to 1 ounce of formula makes the feeding 24 calories per ounce (regular formula is 20 calories per ounce).
I would recommend giving him this energy rich preparation, followed by reassessment with your Physician, to decide further line of action. Majority of babies benefit by Polycose formula.
