Suggest Treatment For Ankle Edema While On Ramipril
My answer as follows:
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
Regarding your concern, I would explain that as both your ankles have been swollen and there is no pain, it is really less likely that your symptoms are related to ankle sprain.
Coming to this point, it is necessary exclude the main possible causes that may lead to this clinical scenario:
- increased fluid retention (heart failure, renal or liver insufficiency)
- chronic venous insufficiency in your lower limbs (although in such case typically the swelling would be unilateral).
That is why I recommend consulting as soon as possible with your attending physician and performing some tests:
- a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound to evaluate your heart function and structure
- NT pro-BNP levels for heart failure
- blood electrolytes
- kidney and liver function tests
- fasting glucose.
A Doppler ultrasound of the leg vessels would be necessary if all the above tests result normal, in order to exclude possible chronic venous insufficiency.
You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.
Hope to have been helpful!
Kind regards,
Dr. Iliri
